April 16th 2023: Good news for residents along the coast as well as beach goers as next year beach sand replenishment will be taking place from Surfside Beach all the way down the coast to Newport Beach. The beach sand replenishment is supposed to happen every five to seven years but hasn’t happened since 2010 due to lack of Federal funding.

The needed project funding was pushed by Rep Michelle Steel and will be lead by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The approximately 1.9 cubic yards of sand will be dredged at two offshore sites before being deposited on the Surfside and Sunset Beaches; The sand will gradually naturally then down the coast to Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

Replenishment of the sand means there will be more space to enjoy the beach but also give more protection from Winter storms for the houses, businesses and streets along the coast. The sand replenishment is scheduled to start next Spring with the ending in February 2025 weather allowing.
